These calls are from West Asset Management - on behalf of AT&T.  I know this because in two months, they have left ONE message.  Every other time they call, I answer and get dead silence and then a hang up.They are calling on a business account - so I cannot do anything but take a message - but I have asked that they stop calling if they do not plan to say anything.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.Under the FDCPA, a debt collector is someone who regularly collects debts owed to others. This includes collection agencies, lawyers who collect debts on a regular basis, and companies that buy delinquent debts and then try to collect them. Here are some questions and answers about your rights under the Act.What types of debts are covered? The Act covers personal, family, and household debts, including money you owe on a personal credit card account, an auto loan, a medical bill, and your mortgage. The FDCPA doesn’t cover debts you incurred to run a business. Can a debt collector contact me any time or any place? No. A debt collector may not contact you at inconvenient times or places, such as before 8 in the morning or after 9 at night, unless you agree to it. And collectors may not contact you at work if they’re told (orally or in writing) that you’re not allowed to get calls there. How can I stop a debt collector from contacting me?If a collector contacts you about a debt, you may want to talk to them at least once to see if you can resolve the matter – even if you don’t think you owe the debt, can’t repay it immediately, or think that the collector is contacting you by mistake. If you decide after contacting the debt collector that you don’t want the collector to contact you again, tell the collector – in writing – to stop contacting you. Here’s how to do that:Make a copy of your letter. Send the original by certified mail, and pay for a “return receipt” so you’ll be able to document what the collector received. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again, with two exceptions: a collector can contact you to tell you there will be no further contact or to let you know that they or the creditor intend to take a specific action, like filing a lawsuit. Sending such a letter to a debt collector you owe money to does not get rid of the debt, but it should stop the contact. The creditor or the debt collector still can sue you to collect the debt. Can a debt collector contact anyone else about my debt?If an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you. If you don’t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people – but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney. What does the debt collector have to tell me about the debt? Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. Can a debt collector keep contacting me if I don’t think I owe any money? If you send the debt collector a letter stating that you don’t owe any or all of the money, or asking for verification of the debt, that collector must stop contacting you. You have to send that letter within 30 days after you receive the validation notice. But a collector can begin contacting you again if it sends you written verification of the debt, like a copy of a bill for the amount you owe. What practices are off limits for debt collectors?Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:     use threats of violence or harm;     publish a list of names of people who refuse to pay their debts (but they can give this information to the credit reporting companies);     use obscene or profane language; or     repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone. False statements. Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives;     falsely claim that you have committed a crime;     falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;     misrepresent the amount you owe;     indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they aren’t; or     indicate that papers they send to you aren’t legal forms if they are. Debt collectors also are prohibited from saying that:     you will be arrested if you don’t pay your debt;     they’ll seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages unless they are permitted by law to take the action and intend to do so; or     legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don’t intend to take the action. Debt collectors may not:     give false credit information about you to anyone, including a credit reporting company;     send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency if it isn’t; or     use a false company name. Unfair practices. Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     try to collect any interest, fee, or other charge on top of the amount you owe unless the contract that created your debt – or your state law – allows the charge;     deposit a post-dated check early;     take or threaten to take your property unless it can be done legally; or     contact you by postcard. Can I control which debts my payments apply to? Yes. If a debt collector is trying to collect more than one debt from you, the collector must apply any payment you make to the debt you select. Equally important, a debt collector may not apply a payment to a debt you don’t think you owe.Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages? If you don’t pay a debt, a creditor or its debt collector generally can sue you to collect. If they win, the court will enter a judgment against you. The judgment states the amount of money you owe, and allows the creditor or collector to get a garnishment order against you, directing a third party, like your bank, to turn over funds from your account to pay the debt. Wage garnishment happens when your employer withholds part of your compensation to pay your debts. Your wages usually can be garnished only as the result of a court order. Don’t ignore a lawsuit summons. If you do, you lose the opportunity to fight a wage garnishment. Can federal benefits be garnished? Many federal benefits are exempt from garnishment, including:     Social Security Benefits     Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits     Veterans’ Benefits     Civil Service and Federal Retirement and Disability Benefits     Service Members’ Pay     Military Annuities and Survivors’ Benefits     Student Assistance     Railroad Retirement Benefits     Merchant Seamen Wages     Longshoremen’s and Harbor Workers’ Death and Disability Benefits     Foreign Service Retirement and Disability Benefits     Compensation for Injury, Death, or Detention of Employees of U.S. Contractors Outside the U.S.     Federal Emergency Management Agency Federal Disaster Assistance But federal benefits may be garnished under certain circumstances, including to pay delinquent taxes, alimony, child support, or student loans. Do I have any recourse if I think a debt collector has violated the law? You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. If you win, the judge can require the collector to pay you for any damages you can prove you suffered because of the illegal collection practices, like lost wages and medical bills. The judge can require the debt collector to pay you up to $1,000, even if you can’t prove that you suffered actual damages. You also can be reimbursed for your attorney’s fees and court costs. A group of people also may sue a debt collector as part of a class action lawsuit and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector’s net worth, whichever amount is lower. Even if a debt collector violates the FDCPA in trying to collect a debt, the debt does not go away if you owe it.What should I do if a debt collector sues me?If a debt collector files a lawsuit against you to collect a debt, respond to the lawsuit, either personally or through your lawyer, by the date specified in the court papers to preserve your rights. Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.For More InformationTo learn more about debt collection and other credit-related issues, visit www.ftc.gov/credit and MyMoney.gov, the U.S. government’s portal to financial education. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. These people are from West Asset Management and they are trying to collect on AT&T bills (and probably collect for other companies as well).  They are legit, but have shady practices.  They were very rude to us, and we had to end the call.

These people are not scammers, although I hate their methods.  They are from West Asset Management, and they are a collection company for AT&T (and perhaps other companies).

This is a collection firm, collecting on bad debt from their business customers. I dont agree with their non stop calling practice, but its the only thing they got left. I received 3 calls a day non stop. Simply call them back and tell them as nice as possible to stop calling you. If they ask who you are then tell them "That person no longer has this number". If they ask for your name, "Ask for his/her name, and politely inform them that you will be reporting his/her/its name and company to the Federal Trade Commission, if they do not remove your number from their list." They are just a private company, and there is no crime in keeping your privacy save. Even collection attorneys have no power over this. They too are a collection firm, but you will have s higher chance of small claims suit. I would call up your local state secretary and very the attorney has completing all registration with local collection company registration statues and federal. Then report them to the FTC for illegal practice. They can also lose their BAR # Lic for similar illegal conduct. Beware of this too business in a box customers. Business in a box, uses third party call letters and callers. You will be found liable if in the wrong.    If this method does not work. Call their company and speak to your so called account manager. Get their address and certify  mail them a letter stating you not longer want to have contact with their company and that you will go through the original debtor. Also include that if they have done anything to your credit they were not authorized by law, and demand all notes removed at once. Then you need to go a credit check, to very that nothing has gone on. Call the original debtor and try to work out a settlement.

These people have called over THIRTY TIMES!  Same MO as the rest of the complaints here except they say they are calling about my AT&T account.  I called AT&T instead of them and there is nothing wrong with my account.  I accused the black woman who called of being involved in an identity theft ring and she hung up.  A "supervisor" called me back with in 5 minutes and became very agitated when I would not give him any information.  I asked him if he has ever Googled his own caller ID number and he hung up on me and tried to call me back FIVE more times in the next hour.  Take no calls from (410) 202-0013!  Report them at once!  SCAMMERS, IDENTITY THEFT RING!!!!!!!!!

Same here...called but didn't recognize number so no answer (if it isn't even in my same area code, not getting answered basically is the rule I follow) cell phone but no message left.  Considering all of the posts have originated this month (February 2012) it looks like it's probably a new scam.Just a heads up folks that next month I believe is when telemarketers can LEGALLY begin to solicit cell phone numbers (I know like they haven't been doing it anyways).  There is a 1-888 number that we can now call to have our cell phones on the Do-Not-Call list BUT you HAVE TO call from the cell phone that you want to be on the list.  I had the number written down here somewhere but can't find it at the moment however I am sure if you google it or something you will come across it.  TOGETHER WE CAN DEFEAT THESE SCAMMERS!!

Got a call on my cell pone at 7:52 pm that hung up after only a few rings. No message was left. Tried to call back and got a very general message giving business hours of 8-5 (very strange since it's after business hours). Also said to call 911 if it was an emergency so I automatically think it's somehow medically related. I don't have Blue Shield as other people have mentioned. Oh well.

Just got off the phone with a Blue Shield representative (at the number on my insurance card). She told me the company DOES contract with Alere. Blue Shield offers at no additional charge (that's a shocker!) some personalized care/treatment/information for clients with chronic or long-term conditions. This James Barnett fellow does not have access to Blue Shield's data base, which is why he asks questions about things you would think he could see on his computer. So she said that the call was not a scam after all.

I got a call from the number as well. It is in the same area code as someone I know, and I answered. They said that they wanted to enroll my husband who is on my health plan for a diabetes program through Blue Shield. I told them I didn't know, but if he was interested I could have him call back. They said no, that's ok, they would call again. So, I am guessing it was a scam. However, I did just get real mail from Blue Shield talking about enrolling in their diabetes program and I called Blue Shield and its legit. So who knows...very suspicious that they wouldn't give me their number though!

I just received a voicemail from the Reno number (775) 829-8885 that addressed me by name, allegedly from someone "calling from Gessinger."  In a credulous tone of voice, she said that she "would like to review a no-cost program with you that is being offered as part of your healthcare plan.  Gessinger encourages your enrollment in this program because it has been so helpful to many members."  She asked me to call 1-888-287-7204 option 6 to discuss the program with me.I called Gessinger and they said it is a legimate company that does deal with them for certain cases.  I told Gessinger if they think I need outside help then THEY should be letting me know they are putting MY phone number out in the world BEFORE they do it - and since I AM NOT interested in this outside "help" that they can call this company back and inform them that they should LOOSE my phone number

I just received a voicemail from the Reno number (775) 829-8885 that addressed me by name, allegedly from someone "calling from Great West Healthcare, now a part of Cigna."  In a credulous tone of voice, she said that she "would like to review a no-cost program with you that is being offered as part of your healthcare plan.  Great-West encourages your enrollment in this program because it has been so helpful to many members."  She asked me to call 1-888-287-7204 option 6 to discuss the program with me.Neither the 775 nor the 888 number resolves to Great-West or Cigna, and while I recognize that companies sometimes outsource call center activities, I err on the side of caution because there are so many scams out there and I really have no easy way of validating the legitimacy of the caller.  If my insurance company wishes to interest me in offers, they may do so in writing, with contact information that actually matches information I know to be correct.  I don't like to be called anyway, and will not make changes to my insurance over the phone to some cold caller, so even if this is legit, the company is going about it the wrong way.Oh yeah, and in googling the originating phone number, I found the Alere website and this page, which shows that callers have represented themselves as Blue Shield.  Even if this is a legit out-sourced call center, do our insurance companies really want to encourage us to accept offers that are presented in this fashion?  Seems to me that such behavior will get you phished sooner or later for the reason I mentioned above, namely that you can't readily verify the legitimacy of the caller.  I will not call back, and I hope there will be no more calls or I may have to contact my insurance provider at their known number (not the number given in the voicemail) to complain.

his is something all the insurers are doing now, which is getting their insureds with certain diseases into care management programs.  Sounds so good that it's a no-cost program and has all these benefits.  But the real question is why would a for-profit company want to spend additional money to do this.  I fear turning over decision making to an RN who will review what my MD says.  They also will set you up with goals and call and assess whether you're meeting your goals.  What if you can't/don't reach their goals?  They wanted to know in the first part of their phone call if I was seeing a cardiologist, oncologist, etc.  I replied yes.  They asked which one.  I said if you're calling me from the insurance company, surely you have that info.  I mean, they should have all the codes and know the exact diagnosis as well as the treatment.  They cited that HIPAA kept them from having access to that info.  Really?   But they wanted confirmation of birth date.  I'm running away from it.  DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR ADDRESS!  Once we had a diagnosis, we started getting offers from pre-paid funeral and cremation providers.

I recieved a call from 775-829-8885 and then a message from this number claiming to be from Blue Shield of CA. I called the number they left, which was different than their caller ID 866-954-4567 option 3 and they  wannted me to verify information and refused to tell me what the program is, I refused and hung up. This is actually a company that works with Blue Sield to manage diseases, I know this because yesterday I got a letter from Blue Shield telling me that I was selected for a Coronary Disease Managment Program and that someone whould be contacting me regarding this. Ha, I 25 years old and weight 109lbs, I don't have Coronary Artery Disease! Idiots! I was thinking this call might be it. Turns out it is, I called My Actual Blue Shield of CA and asked them to remove me from what ever list they have me on, they did and the calls stopped. Good Luck!

I received a call today claiming they were from Blue Shield and wanted to discuss a personal matter with me. They asked for my date of birth and mailing address, when I wouldn't give it to them they said I could call them at 800-551-6227. When I called that number it sent me to Alere company and I asked to speak with someone. I was routed to someone claiming to be Ronald Geraty, again wanting my personal info. I wouldn't give it to them and called Blue Shield direct and they said they had nobody by that name. After some internet research I have come to the conclusion this seems to be a fraud. I think everyone should call Blue Shield and report this.

I got a call from someone named James "with Blue Shield, your insurance company" who asked me to call 800-551-6227.  I have no idea what this is in reference to.  When I tried to call back I was disconnected.  Based on the posts above, I probably won't be quick to return the call.

They claimed to be calling from Blue Shield and asked for my information to enroll in a program to get the most out of the medical benefits. I was suspicious, cut the call short and called Blue Shield. The customer rep said they have programs somewhat like that but only for people with certain conditions and that the phone was NOT a Blue Shield number.

Called me at work.  If you do their 30 second survey you get transferred to a real, live operator.  I told her I didn't think the cruise was really free and not to call back.  She transferred my call to someplace that added me to their DO NOT CALL registry.  We'll see if it works!

I received a call from Melanie Collins at Weinberger and Associates, about check fraud.  I told her interesting -I haven't written checks in a very long time.  She gave me my case number,  and turned me over to Larry Turner,  He said he had warrants on his desk for my arrest from Ace Cash Express, I told him I have never written a check to them,  I have spoken with Ace regarding these calls,  They sell their outstanding debts a National Credit Adjustors.  Call them.  Ace was not interested in settling the debt as they have been paid.  I told the guy at Ace what these peop;e were saying.  He said not to deal with them as they are breaking the law.  Larry Turner said he was sending the deputy to pick me up today.  I told him to send the deputy-I would be home all day.  He hung up me.  I will now file a complaint with the FCC and Texas Attorney Generals office.

I tried to figure out what was going on, she didnt know my last name, then when she got it, it was spelled wrong, first name spelled wrong and I filled out this application? Pretty sure I know how to spell my name. WOuldnt send me documentation, wanted a money gram... I just finished talking to an Officer who will be calling her... pretty sure she will hang up on him like she did me. He told me to just say that the police are following through with an investigation and they can keep calling, but the police are handling it, and they will stop. also tell them that everything they say is being recorded.

I am a probation officer. One of my clients received a call from this man telling her he was going to charge her with two felonies if she did not send him money. Obviously he cannot charge her with anything.  I called him two times. The first time he put me on hold and never came back and the second time, he said he would call me back. He never did. I directed my client NOT to talk to him if he calls her again.  I would encourage anyone who has contact with him to turn it over to their local law enforcement agency.

A William Finch threatened criminal charges as well as told me I should turn myself in to local authorities for a felony that I was wanted for in conjunction with the payday loan.
